Thieves or Good Business?!?!

I was watching a commercial for an undisclosed cash loan company. After the really corny commercial…the fine print came on the screen. I decided to press pause (thanks to my wonderful MOXI Box with DVR) and read the fine print. Here is what it said: “The APR for a typical loan of $2600.00 is 99.25% with 42 monthly payments of $216.55.”

Allow me to break that down for you for a typical $2600 loan:

  • You would borrow $2600 from this company.
  • You would commit to be ENSLAVED to them for 42 months (3.5 Years).
  • Your monthly payment would be $216.55.
  • You would pay them a total of $9114.00 over the 3.5 Years.
  • They make a total of $6514.00 off of you!

What if you paid yourself $216.55 for 12 months (1 Year)? You would have $2600!! Do you think that you could have a little patience, instead of becoming enslaved over the $2600 – Samsung – 61″ 1080p DLP HDTV? I personally would much rather pay for it in a year instead of the TV costing me $9114.00 over 3.5 Years. Although, it is your choice!

Anyway, I personally think that the aforementioned companies are thieves, but I can only put so much blame on them…you may be the one who agrees to it! Think before you sign that sheet! The TV, Camera, whatever is not worth being enslaved and over paying!

Can I get an amen? Peace!

Uprising 2.0

Coming July 16-20…The Uprising. This is for all our rising 6th Graders here at NewSpring Church. The Uprising is a week of nightly activities that will give them a chance to dive into the IGNITE Middle School Ministry. Here is the schedule of events for the week:

We started this event last year, with a huge amount of success. We have high expectations this year. This proved to be a GREAT way for us to connect with rising 6th Graders and for them to connect with our leaders. Our leaders did an outstanding job getting to know the students and getting them excited about joining our ministry.

This Sunday is the day to signup. Registration cards will be available, so get one at the info kiosk or the 5th Grade room before you leave. Peace!

Prayer….

Tuesday night Justin Land, one of worship leaders at NewSpring Church, came up to me and told me that he had prayed for me that morning. He went into a list of things that he specifically prayed for me and it blew me away. Not only did that moment encourage me, but it also it challenged me. It made me ask myself, who I have earnestly prayed for with specifics. It had been a little while…so, that changed this week. Each morning I spend sometime praying for whoever God lays on my heart and I pray specifics. Later in the day, I send them an email to let them know what I prayed for them. I want to be an encouragement for them and let them know that they were lifted up.

Try it…it will bless you more than you will know!

250 G’s of Skittles….

Are you serious? A man is being charged with stealing $250,000 worth of Skittles candy. WOW!! I cannot fathom this. What was he going to do, go into a convenience store and say, “I have a lot of Skittles that I would like to sell if you are interested?” Seriously, dude think before you act next time!

Here is a link to the full story.

Thank you Jesus….

This is the scripture that I read this morning for my quiet time. Thought I would pass it along…as I believe that we all struggle with submitting ourselves to God and His will on a consistent daily basis.

“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” James 4:1-10

God, Thank you for your word and how it can teach, cleanse, confront, and comfort. I praise you! May you be honored in all that I say and do. Amen.

10 Things to Remember When Blogging

Everyone on staff at NewSpring that has some sort of online presence (blog, Virb, Facebook, MySpace, etc.) met with Tony Morgan after our All-Staff Meeting with Perry. He gave us “10 Things to Remember When Blogging.” These things are all given to us to help protect us and the church as we all continue to reach out to others in the online community.

10 Things to Remember When Blogging:

  1. Let your boss know.
    • Do you want your direct supervisor to be surprised?
  2. Respect confidentiality.
    • Two questions to ask:
      • Is this news to people?
      • Has our Senior Pastor shared this with the congregation?
      • If the answer is no, then hold back.
  3. Respect the church and the staff.
    • Have each other’s back.
  4. Respect the law.
    • Make sure you have the facts correct, no copyrighted material, etc.
  5. Respect your time.
    • Our first repsonsibility is to Jesus, family, and then to NewSpring Church.
  6. Respect other ministries.
    • We shouldn’t say anything negative about another specific ministry or ministry leader, but should discuss strategies, etc. Remember, we are on the same team.
  7. Let Communications Department know about media inquiries.
  8. People will find what you write.
  9. Once you publish it, it cannot be retrieved.
    • RSS Feed Readers are a joyous thing, but can be dangerous.
  10. You never take your staff hat off.

It was a GREAT session, and these are all good things to be reminded of from time to time. Thanks Tony!

I would also say that we always need to remember why we are here on this earth: To Make Jesus Famous. Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men…” So, do you blog to cause a stir? Do you blog so your stats will rise through the roof? If you blog for any of those reasons or others that are not to Make Jesus Famous…then STOP right now! If Jesus is not the reason…then you have no reason! Just to add my thoughts to an already great list of things to remember.

One of the Greatest Youthworkers I know….

One of the greatest youth workers I know passed away Raymond Patrick Downer went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 30, 2007. Mr. Downer was an awesome man of God, that stood in our world allowing his light shine for all the world to see.

You see, Mr. Downer was 84 years young when the Lord called him home. Some of you may be wondering how Mr. Downer could be one of the greatest youth workers I have known. Well, allow me to explain:

Mr. Downer had a huge impact on my life. He was an older gentleman that saw something in me. He would always make an intentional effort to talk to me, to ask me how I was doing, and how he could pray for me. As a youth, I was a little scared of the older gentleman coming up to me and asking me these questions. So, naturally, at first I was standoffish and did not say much. Just gave the typically,Yeah. Uh,huh. Nothing. but that NEVER deterred him from making an investment into me!

After sometime, I grew very fond of him and became very thankful for him taking the time to ask and truly caring enough of me to ask. This continued all through my high school years (Fast forward a bit while I was away at college he would ask my mom every week those same questions and would then ask me every time he saw me. )

Mr. Downer loved Jesus, his family, his church, young people, and sports. Those loves in his life always shined through him.

Mr Downer and some of his close buddies would always trek out to Memorial Stadium in Florence, SC every Friday Night to watch the High School teams play. Of the three high schools in Florence, it did not matter who was playing they were there watching, cheering, making predictions and loving life.

This held true for every single high football game I played at home. He was always there watching cheering making predictions and loving life. I came to expect him to be there at those games. I remember that each time I would come off the field after making a big catch or scoring a touchdown I would always look and point to my family and Mr. Downer. Not only in my times of success, but also my times of failure (missing a block, getting a penalty called, etc.) he still had a smile on his face and was proud of me.

You see, Mr. Downer cared about me as a person and he made an investment in me. He never taught me Sunday School, never really led me in any official role, but he cared. He showed he cared by talking to me, praying for me, being present in my life, and following up with me.

Those are the types of youth workers we need: those who will show they care by talking to students, pray for them, be present in their lives, and follow up with them. May I be as good a youth worker as Ray Downer. If I am, then lives will be impacted through the power of Jesus.

IGNITE & Phenomenal Awards for May

Last night was our last IGNITE service at the Fusebox at the Anderson Mall. We are moving to a new facility called The 2Seven. We also finished up our series called Prison Break. We spent the time discussing issues that keep us locked in prison and away from what God has called us to do. Shame, Guilt, Anger, and Jealousy were the main discussion topics, but last night we also threw in some others such as: pornography, cutting, suicidal thoughts, and cheating.

One of the highlights of the night, was when Andrew Sentell, Meagan Gregory, and Tiffany Sellers came out and sang an acoustic version of I Need You to Love Me by Barlow Girl. Take some time to go and read the lyrics to the song, even go to I-Tunes and buy the darn thing and listen to it.

The night was geared towards presenting the gospel in a clear understandable way. Well, the best part of the whole night was when we we had 5 students accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. It was awesome. We also had numerous students say they are tired of playing games and they want to take their relationship to the next level with Jesus.

After IGNITE, the volunteers all went to Chili’s for our First Sunday Meeting. I always love hanging out with our volunteer leaders. During this time we always hand out our Phenomenal Awards. These awards go to volunteers who have done something PHENOMENAL throughout the month.

Here are the Phenomenal Award Winners for this month:

  • Meagan Gregory: Phenomenal Witness in the Workplace
  • David Fisher: Phenomenal Ability to Plan and Execute a Small Group Activity
  • Ali Henson: Phenomenal Ability to Assist and take care of our leaders and observers
  • Sean Gaffney: Phenomenal Service In and Outside of IGNITE.

I think I got all those right but, if I didn’t they are really close!

Also tonight is stay-at-home date night. Deanna and I are ordering a pizza and renting a movie. We are having a time to just hang out together. I can’t wait to just chill with the most awesome woman in the world! Peace!
